Hello Everyone! My name is Michelle Ubah and I am a trained DONA doula. I am from Nigeria, but I currently reside in Ann Arbor, MI with my cute little puppy, Ava.
Where do I even begin!?!
Ever since I could remember, I have enjoyed taking care of people whether young or old. I am the second oldest of 7 siblings, so being a caretaker has always been a part of who I am. I started babysitting at the age of 13. I learned the ins and out of taking care of babies, an experience I will never forget. As I got older, I started caring of the geriatric population which has been such an enriching experience. Everyone who knew me understood how passionate I was in ensuring people were properly cared for no matter their age.
At the age of 15, I had the opportunity to go back to Nigeria, my homeland. While meeting my family for the first time, I learned that several women in my family experienced preterm births, miscarriages and pregnancy complications which was absolutely mind blowing to me. I later learned that these women did not have proper education or support on the process of childbirth. I was furious but empowered to improve these negative birth outcomes. This opened the doors to maternal and child health and understanding and what I can do to ensure that women were supported through birth. I came back to the United States and went full force into doing research about breastfeeding, preterm birth and low birth weight. Upon working on these projects, I was connected to several community organizations and it was through these connections that I
learned what a doula was. After doing extensive research, I literally cried because I knew this was my calling. Being able to support mothers through their birth journey was a dream come true.
Immediately, I enrolled into a doula class that changed my life forever.
As a birth doula, I support families through one of the most special moments in their lives. I want to ensure that every mother can have the birthing experience they desire. My work as a doula starts by encouraging families to educate themselves and make informed decisions. I am here to provide the tools that will help expectant families feel safe and comfortable. I will also be an advocate for my clients and support them emotionally and physically throughout their pregnancy and beyond. I want you to know that I am here for YOU and at the end I hope that you have an enriching and impactful experience.
A big shoutout to my amazing mentor! It has been an honor to learn and work alongside Katy who has a decade of experience not only as a doula but also as a women’s health and fertility coach and childbirth educator.
On my free time, I really enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, shopping and watching movies on Netflix.
