Hello! My name is Annie Bigwood (she/her) and I am a trained birth and postpartum doula and childbirth educator. I am also currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Social Work with a focus on infant mental health. I live in Hamtramck, MI with my partner and our dog.
In 2020 I trained as a birth doula, a postpartum doula and a childbirth educator with Heart Soul Birth Pros. I went on to work as a Maternal Infant Health Case Planner at a local Detroit nonprofit where I supported young women who were pregnant and/or parenting and experiencing homelessness. Now I am excited to dive more deeply into birth and postpartum doula work with the help of Katy’s mentorship. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a seasoned doula!
My passion for birth and community health began when I was serving as a Community Health volunteer with the Peace Corps in Senegal from 2012 – 2014. Working alongside the village midwife and witnessing the strength of birthing women in my community planted the seed for my current journey into birthwork. I find great joy and fulfillment out of helping others and I am honored to stand by birthing people during the transitions of pregnancy, birth and new parenthood. I also love to connect with other reproductive justice advocates through volunteering with the local nonprofit Birth Detroit.
I am dedicated to advocacy, equity and access to care for all people regardless of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity. I offer nurturing and nonjudgmental support and I celebrate all bodies, family configurations and identities. I believe in empowering every birthing person with the knowledge and confidence that they need to bring new life into the world. As your doula I will provide you with calm, compassionate care before, during and after labor. My goal is to help you access your own intuition and support you through whatever choices feel right for you and your birth.
